The distinguished New Orleans-born musician Wynton Marsalis has worn many hats: dynamic trumpeter, intrepid composer and bandleader, and artistic director for Jazz at Lincoln Center, which he founded, in 1987. He is a Pulitzer Prize winner and a multi-Grammy holder—the only to win in both jazz and classical in the same year—but, chiefly, he is an ambassador for those traditional forms across generations. His most recent recordings with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, “We the People” and “Let Freedom Swing,” seek the intersection of arts appreciation and political involvement. Marsalis sampled his expansive repertoire in performance and was joined in conversation by the senior editor Nick Trautwein at the twenty-seventh New Yorker Festival.
